Acclaimed storyteller ‘Momma Kemba’ will present a fully costumed, dramatic portrayal of iconic civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, bringing to life her powerful legacy as a voice for desegregation, voting rights, and economic security for African Americans. Join us online via Zoom on Tuesday, February 3, at 2:00 pm for a presentation about the satire-comedy musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Northwestern PhD Candidate and Dramaturg Juniper Viernes will discuss the uproarious corporate comedy playing at Northwestern’s Wirtz Center February 20-March 1. With a Broadway premiere in 1961 and multiple revivals since, How to Succeed tells the story of Finch, an ambitious young window-washer. Armed with a helpful handbook on success, Finch makes his way to the top of the corporate ladder in no time. This virtual lecture is free to attend, but registration is required. Join Dr. Leslie Mendoza Temple and Dr. Wanda Cruz-Knight in either cohort 1 (held exclusively in person) or cohort 2 (held exclusively online) to explore how to navigate the healthcare system with the intention of advocating for yourself and setting personal health goals. Join Dr. Wanda Cruz-Knight and Dr. Yuliya Solinski on February 5 in the Levy Senior Center Library at 1:30 pm for the Levy Longevity: Living Well Longer, where you'll discover nutrition and exercise tips for healthy aging. In this Levy Longevity, Dr. Cruz-Knight and Dr. Solinski will explore common nutritional challenges associated with aging, highlighting essential nutrients such as protein and key micronutrients. You’ll also learn about evidence-based exercise counseling and leave with practical strategies for combining nutrition and movement to support healthy aging. In January 1776, many Americans thought independence was a terrible idea. It seemed impossible that 13 weak, far-flung colonies could become a nation. Most people favored reconciling with Great Britain. Yet just a few months later, those same Americans believed independence was worth fighting for. How did popular opinion change so fast? Interested in learning Mahjongg? Enter our lottery for a chance to join this fun, stimulating, and social journey into the world of Mahjongg! Over five engaging sessions, you’ll learn the rules, strategies, and rhythms of this classic tile game. Each class builds on the last, so it’s essential to attend all five, especially the first one, when we cover the fundamentals. The classes will be held at the Levy Senior Center on the following Thursdays: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, and 2/12 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Join us online via Zoom on Thursday, January 29, at 12:00 pm for a presentation about Bertolt Brecht’s epic theater work The Caucasian Chalk Circle. Northwestern PhD Candidates and Dramaturgs Noah Marcus and Maame Quayson will discuss the influential parable that will take center stage at Northwestern’s Wirtz Center February 5-8. Written at the close of World War II, Caucasian Chalk Circle tells the story of a young maid, Grusha, who takes a daring chance when, in the chaos of an emerging war, she saves the child heir of Grusinia. Due to the weather, Scrabble will be canceled on Friday, Jan. 23. Do you enjoy word games in a fun and collaborative setting? The LSCF is continuing Bring Back Scrabble with Sarah Serota. Levy Senior Center members will bond through games of speed, strategy, and skill with tile-based word games such as Scrabble and Bananagrams – no expertise is needed!. The program will be held in Craft Room B at the Levy Senior Center on Fridays from 1:30 – 3:00 pm, with the first session beginning on January 9 - end date to be determined. Registration is closed.

Need help utilizing FaceTime or Zoom, scanning QR codes, organizing and sharing your photos, downloading apps, sending emails, or even navigating patient care portals and hospital websites? Tech Tuesdays can help you with a variety of issues you may be experiencing. The Levy Senior Center, in partnership with the LSCF, continues to offer appointments for free tech support and training to help you feel more comfortable with your devices. To make an appointment for a 30-minute session in the Levy Senior Center library, call the front desk at (847) 448-8250 today. Appointments are available Tuesdays 1:00 - 3:00 pm.
