About the April Lecture
The Incarceration of Japanese Americans During World War II: Relevant Today?

During World War II, the United States government forced 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry from their homes on the west coast and moved them into “internment camps.”
Seventy thousand were American citizens.
Our speaker’s parents and extended family lived through this incarceration, and she will share the story of how this happened.
Elaine Kaneshiro is a Japanese-American and educator, born and raised in Chicago. With border walls, travel bans, and a Muslim registry as news topics, this presentation is especially timely.

The Lure and Lore of Spices from Around the World

Throughout time, man’s destiny has been shaped by the search for the elusive spices coveted by nobility and royalty.
The history of the spice trade reveals fascinating tales of piracy, adventures and wars battled to control the trade. Exotic myths arose in explanation of the expense of the spice treasures.
Patty and Tom Erd have spent their lives as spice merchants in pursuit of the highest quality spices from locations all over the globe.
They will share interesting historical facts, anecdotes, and entertaining tales of daring do!

The Levy Senior Center Foundation continues their new lecture series this year for residents 55+ years who are passionate about learning.
All lectures will be held in the Linden Room at the Levy Senior Center at 300 Dodge Avenue in Evanston. The lectures are free, but registration is required.
