An Overview of Significant American Paintings: 1750 to Present

The arts often shape and give voice to the changing culture, economy, and tensions within society. This was true in the earliest days of the formation of the United States and continues today.

Dr. Roberta Katz will discuss 25 key American artworks, helping viewers to look anew at classics such as Portrait of Paul Revere (1768) by John Singleton Copley and Sky Above Clouds IV (1965), by Georgia O’Keeffe.

Using vivid color images, Dr. Katz will not only explain why these 25 paintings are significant from an artistic standpoint, but also weave in the historical, political, social, and economic forces that influenced each artist.
