Dee Alexander Packs the House for the first Jamming Jean Concert of 2020

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

Chicago’s own Dee Alexander and her band played to an at-capacity crowd Friday, March 6

at the Levy Center. Additional chairs were brought in to accommodate the more than 350 guests who

gathered to hear Alexander’s smoldering R&B. Her soulful rendition of “Cheek to Cheek” was one of the classics she performed, interspersed with talking with the crowd and her established backup musicians.

“Love is the answer,” Alexander told the crowd. “Love is the key —it’s all about love. There is a lot of trouble in the world, but I’m here to bring joy.”

Born on Chicago’s west side, Alexander is one of Chicago’s most gifted and respected female vocalists/songwriters, and was named the 2014 Jazz Vocalist of the Year by NPR.

Alexander also performed the fan favorite, “Blue Skies.”

Evanstonian and Dee Alexander fan Joy Sanchez knows Dee from a peace concert Sanchez organized for the Buddhist community center and was thrilled to come support her friend. Sanchez joined the Levy Center the same year it opened and enjoys the many concerts and programs.

Gerald Franklin works for the City of Evanston in Traffic Operations and is responsible for all street signage and traffic control for Evanston’s many special events and detours. He goes to see Alexander whenever he can. “I’m a huge fan, and Dee and I grew up together in the same neighborhood on Chicago’s west side. I plan to see her perform again in May!”

Alexander’s skillful mix of ballads mixed with bee bop had attendees dancing throughout the nearly two hour show.

Gourmet concessions for the concert were graciously provided by Hecky’s Barbecue, which offered delicious barbecue options and sides, including a crowd favorite, macaroni and cheese.
